DJing & Promoting (Soul Satellite)

How did you get involved in Soul Satellite?

I used to run Soul Connection FM, however that ended abruptly for reasons beyond my control.  So, I took it upon myself to set up my own thing afresh, where I was in control.

Sum up what the station is all about:

It is  mainly about good quality House music, but above all it is about community.  Soul Satellite is a vehicle for DJs to express themsleves, and for people to enjoy themselves.

Soul Satellite has played two gigs at The Charterhouse in London, what else is in the pipleline:

More gigs at The Charterhouse - we have a bi monthly residency there, plus a Soul Satellite gig in Portugal in September.  We are also looking at venues in the USA at the moment, so watch this space!

What piece of advice would you give anyone entering the industry right now:

Manage your own expectations as not many others will.  Stay true to yourself, be yourself and above all do what you do best.  Whether you are a DJ, promoter or producer, it is all about the who you know and not always what you know.  It is a very cut throat industry and there are a lot of people who will take you for a ride.  Ensure that you surround yourself with people that you can trust.

What is your current view on the industry and where do you see it going:

It is all going digital and moving at a very fast pace.  Most people I know now only use CDJ or MP3 software, vinyl is becoming more obsolete.  The few I know that only use vinyl are struggling to keep up with everyone else.  Even though the feeling of vinyl can't be matched, there is so much availability in the market nowadays of easier and cheaper recordings.  Everyone now wants to be a DJ, whereas years ago it toook days, weeks or even months to mix your first tune properly using turntables, it was an art that required mastering, you either had it or you didn't.  Now with the exploding DJ industry anyone can pull off a mix by using CDJ or PC software, however, you must also know what to play, and that is where many fail.

I can see the industry becoming even more fragmented with different styles and formats.  There are a growing number of lables now that send out promos via download links and MP3 sticks, even CDRs are becoming obsolete!

Anything else you think we should know about you?:

I intend to get back into production as it has been three years since I released anything, so watch this space!

Your thoughts on NCS...?

I think it is a good idea to have a medium that can provide information on what is going on in the industry.  It is important to get different views from DJs, promoters and producers, and to have a site that does this is great.
