What are you up to right now:
Working for Intemix.com.au - Australia's premier dance music and culture website. Im very happy to be part of the team there. I work as a production co-ordinator, which mainly invloves interviewing a lot of touring artists as well as producing stacks of online content for the site.
What has been your best ever gig:
Playing at last year's Harbourlife festival here in Sydney. It is set in the most idyllic location and anyone who has seen it drools at the backdrop. It is a mssive festival put on by major promoters, Fuzzy, and is situated in the botanical gardens at Miss Maquaries Chair overlooking Sydney Harbour with the full view of te Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and the whole of the city
An amazing gig!
Your system set up:
Two 1200's, Pioneer DJM909 mixer, Serato Scartch Live and M-Audio Torq, Trigger Finger MPC 3000 and a whole bunch of other synths.
What piece of advice would you give to anyone getting into the industry today:
Only ever get invloved if you truly love the music, the real heads will pick you out instantly if you are in it for any other reason. The last thing you want is no credibility from your peers.
What is your view on the current situation in the industry and where do you see it going:
I could only really comment on my country, and sadly I have to say that Australia is in an awful state - the rise of electro has dramatically changed club culture here.
Everything from fashion, age of clubbers, music policy in venues and even the drugs being used! It has caused many of the country's best DJs to quit or look for other work.
To put it simply, if you don't play electro, your only hope of DJing is in smaller bars, almost by way of background music!
Unfortunately for music genres such as Soulful & Vocal House, US House, Hip Hop, Tech House etc are becoming less and less heard of here by the day.
I look at what the younger clubbers are into and how they dress and they genuinely do not have a clue about the real music scene, how it started, what it is about in terms of culture and spirituality, and it does not look like it is going to change soon here unfortunately.
Anything else we think we should know about you:
I am endorsed by Digi design/M-Audio after using their DJ software TORQ. It has greatly changed my style and allows me to be more creative with my sets. I am always having fun and enjoying DJing more than ever.
I recently toured Europe promoting TORQ and spent a few weeks in Ibiza, where I played Cafe Mambo, El Divino & Bar M. In Sydney I have played lots of great festivals such as Good Vibrations, The Playground Weekender, Parklife, 360 & Harbourlife. I've supported some icons in the biz such us DJ Shadow, Grandmaster Flash, Jazzy Jeff, Z Trip & Ingognito.
In 2004 I won the Heiniken Thirst DJ competition, where I warmed up for Roger Sanchez and Eric Morillo. It has been an amazing few years, but due to the way the scene is going in Australia I will be relocating to Europe from May of next year and will also attempt the whole season in Ibiza!
Your thoughts on NCS:
NCS is NeCeSsary!!! Ha, ha...we need more communities like NCS to help promote further awarness of quality music. It is a great site and I look forward to working alongside the team to help promote the brand to a larger audience!
