NCS Interview with Lisa Kappler
Lisa is the heartbeat of Soul Satellite Radio and always a welcome guest on these shores when she can fly over from the States.
Name
Lisa Kappler
How long have you been DJing:
I keep saying I'm going to learn!
Web address/contact details:
http://www.soul-satellite.com lisak@soulsatellite.co.uk
Nationality:
American
Town/City:
Lowell, Massachusetts
Your style:
House: I like it all... Not sure I could say one way or another what my style is, but I guess if I was under duress and it meant death I'd have to say the deeper the better.
Favourite DJ:
Andy Ward, Grant Nelson, Brian Cheetham
Local DJs:
DJ Adilson, Bradford James, Osheen
Favourite producer:
I can't play favorites! I like too many!
Favourite Label:
I find so much great music out there on so many different labels that it would be hard for me to narrow it down to one or just a few.
Favourite artist/band:
U2 - I know! Not house related at all! Other than there have been quite a few remixes over the years. The ones by Jacknife Lee are quite high on my list!
Favourite ever record:
12" New Order Blue Monday that I got in high school
Favourite ever album:
It's a three way tie between U2 - The Joshua Tree, New Order - Substance, and Depeche Mode - 101
Top tune right now:
Osunlade feat. Divine Essence - my reflection
What are you up to right now:
Right now working on getting a new and improved Soul Satellite up and running!
Your inspiration:
My uncle Mark, without him I'd probably never have found my way to house music. Growing up he taught me to be open minded and listen to all types of music, you name it we listened to it. Were he alive today I'm sure he'd be beside me in the clubs!
Your tipple:
Vodka!!!!
Favourite club to go to:
Soundfactory in NYC before it turned into Pacha. KICKASS sound system in there! Worthy of the 4 hour drive there and back for a Saturday night/Sunday morning dance-a-thon.
Your system set up:
Call me a geek, I have 2 dell laptops and a Dell XPS400 with a kick ass surround sound system
What piece of advice would you give to anyone getting into the scene today:
Like what you like! Don't let anyone tell you what to listen to or force their opinions on you. Diversity is what makes the world go round!
What is your local scene like compared to elsewhere:
The house scene in Boston is so different from the UK.
The scene here is or maybe I should say was all commercial house, hip hop and rnb. I definitely see that starting to change. A lot of underground clubs are popping up and gaining popularity.
People don't want to go to the clubs to hear the same music being played week after week. This is the main reason why I had stopped going out locally and saved myself for trips to NYC and the UK.
I found myself looking more and more for my type of house which is anything from soulful to deep and dirty and it seemed as if they only place I could hear it was online. When Soul Satellite came to be I was in heaven!
Boston is just a little behind the times I guess but I still love it!
What is your role in Soul Satellite:
I'm the station/site manager and I love every minute of it!
Anything else about you, you think we should know:
I'm a little crazy? I didn't start going to clubs or listening to house music until I was 30.
Your thoughts on NCS…!
I think NCS is fantastic.
It is a great place for DJ's, producers, and promoters to come together to get their thoughts and ideas heard.
I'm not a DJ, or a producer, or a promoter (well maybe I am in a way.. I sure try to promote Soul Satellite!) but I like to learn as much as I can about something that I'm passionate about and I sure am passionate about my music.
NCS is the perfect forum for that.
