First and foremost Matt is an outstanding, time served, DJ - the most important thing of course when booking an artist to entertain and intrigue your audience, not to mention the wide exposure he can provide to venues and events with his extensive media platforms. These combined, Matt is an exceptional addition to event billing.
Matt is the founder and owner of New City Sound (NCS). His mission statement from the outset was to create a DJ, record label and production team which delivered credible but accessible House music, based on passion not profit. The team has taken many forms but they’ve stayed true to those principles. NCS remains an independent, underground DJ collective and record label.
Matt’s own roots lie in the heady vinyl days through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s when soul, funk and disco were morphing into the legendary House music scenes of New York, Chicago, London and Manchester. An outlet for what such music could provide by way of escapism and discovery came in the form of the (in)famous Hippo Club in Cardiff during the 90’s and the soulful House based Lamerica, still going strong today. A young 20 something’s first trip of many to the White Isle in the early 90’s and nights at Pacha, Mambo, Amnesia and Privilege further fuelled the fire.
A vast childhood collection of records by Stevie Wonder, Prince, ELO and Chic began to get an awkward attempt at mixing on 1210’s, with hours locked away trying to match impossible organic beats. The arrival of the famed 12” vinyl saw Matt travelling the country with arm stretching boxes of records, securing gigs week in and week out before setting up New City Sound in 2006, primarily as a DJ outfit, before venturing into label and production in more recent years. Influences such as Defected, Joey Negro, Grant Nelson, Kklass and Dimitri from Paris were a staple part of his sets and remain so today, along with an unquenchable thirst for the credible emerging Balearic style thanks to pioneers such as Danny Rampling, Jose Padilla and Sasha. It was something of a ‘meet your heroes’ then when Matt’s own nights saw him book headline appearances by the likes of Joey Negro, Grant Nelson, Kklass, Danny Rampling and other esteemed artists - The Shapeshifters, Soul Central, Junior Jack & Kid Crem and Toolroom records, as well as sets alongside Fat Boy Slim, Carl Cox, Jazzie B, Bushwaka, Solutrain and Pete Tong. To also receive ‘recommended listing’ for his nights from International DJ magazine and to receive their seal of approval as a ‘technically blinding DJ’ is something of an accolade. Now a veteran of the White Isle, Matt has had the privilege of playing at world renown venues such as Cafe del Mar, Nassau Beach Club and Cafe Savannah and across the globe from New York to Portugal to London and Barcelona.
New City Sound has found its regular DJ home nestled in the acclaimed music scene in Bristol at venues along the harbour side, at Motion, Harvey Nichols Cocktail Bar, Timbuk 2 and with a recent residency at the stunning and sophisticated Aluna.
Matt is also the area manager for Wales and West of England for The DJ Academy Organisation, the world’s leading mix, production and music academy. He is therefore very much in touch with the grass roots of emerging talent, teaching and nurturing the next generation of pioneers.
On the production front, Matt’s vivid, varied and melodic representation of all he holds dear can be heard in tracks which feature in the main download charts such as Traxsource, Beatport and Juno. Writing and producing with Kklass was another ‘meet the heroes’ moment, in addition to remixing and releasing edits from icons like Prince and Tears for Fears, available for all to enjoy and download free of charge by clicking the Soundcloud and Mixcloud icons to the left of the site pages. He remains busy in the studio with plenty of releases in the pipeline, as well as collaborations with Kyle & Corinne from the NCS team.
That said, nothing compares for Matt to delivering on the decks a well programmed and perfectly mixed set to knowledgeable and discerning people, whether that be bar, club, beach, festival or radio.

The seed of passion and genuine love for music was planted at a young age for Corinne, thanks to her Dad. She was brought up listening to a diverse and wide variety of music in his dedicated music room, littered with rarities and memorabilia through the eras and which still influence her today.
Studying for a degree in fine art, it wasn’t long before her zest for music was pulling away at her, and away from her studies...
Regularly disheartened in her early clubbing days with what (she thought) her town had to offer, until one night she slipped into the club located next door to the bar she was in and, quite literally, the doors opened to a new world - they were playing House music. Everything from that point changed. A new passion was ignited, one which she could not shake.
Corinne immersed herself in this new infatuation; from an avid listener to Pete Tong’s Friday night show and attending Time Flies, Lamerica and Hed Kandi every weekend. To hassling the DJs for tracks they’d played, to exploring and learning the depth and history of this sound.
She signed up to the DJ Academy and quickly picked up the necessary skills and flare which would push her to become the DJ she is today. She acknowledges, “signing up to the course was one of the best decisions I ever made!”
Corinne became more and more involved in (DJ Academy tutor), Matt Johnson’s, team, New City Sound, impressing more established DJs with her skill, dedication and choice of tracks; she swiftly became an integral part of the NCS stable. In Matt’s own word’s, ‘such freakish passion and ability could not be ignored’.
Under the umbrella of House, Corinne loves to play balearic, melodic and deep to nu-disco, funky and up-lifting. She counts the likes of Dimitri from Paris, Greg Wilson, Crazy P, Joey Negro, Eric Prydz, Faithless and The Chemical Brothers as influences, all of whom you’re are likely to hear in her sets.
Corinne is just as enthusiastic DJ’ing in underground, sweaty clubs like Cardiff’s iconic Clwb ifor Bach and Undertone, to the more ‘sophisticated’ scenes of a cocktail bar, like Aluna and Harvey Nichols (where she also regularly plays for their in-store beauty events). You will always feel in safe hands with Corinne - bar, club, fashion show or festival; she will read the crowd and deliver.
A DJ highlight for Corinne was the privilege of playing at the world renowned Cafe Savannah, Ibiza.
Corinne has recently turned her hand to production, collaborating with Matt & Kyle, and she has also made a stella remix of Hot Chocolate’s ‘Disco Queen’. You can enjoy this free download here
She is currently working on her own original productions and more remixes too!

If you have been in one of Bristol’s ‘cooler’ bars and clubs in recent years you may have had the pleasure of a DJ set from Simon Lloyd.
Some say that good things come to those who wait (and work hard!) and that’s certainly true of Simon who moved from a love of listening to music - to a love of playing to a crowd. A veteran of the scene with over 20 years’ experience, Simon is highly regarded on the local Bristol circuit and further afield with those in the know.
Equally at home in bijou bar or underground club, Simon uses his wealth of knowledge in music and passes on with pure passion and energy.
A pillar of NCS for the last seven years and resident DJ for stylish fashion store Harvey Nichols since 2013, plus current residencies for No.24 and Parallel Dimensions, means Simon is one of the busiest DJs in the team, playing bars and clubs every weekend.
2015 and 2016 saw Simon perform over a dozen DJ sets at the Glastonbury Festival and 2016 saw his debut at one of the UK’s most credible festivals, Shindig Weekender, where he played alongside Marshall Jefferson and Midnight Riot.
Staying true to his roots of a diverse musical background, Simon hosts a weekly radio show on Soultrain Radio - with some influential guest mixes from around the globe including Danny Rampling, Greg Wilson and many more.
2016/2017 sees Simon move into production with remixes and tracks due out later in 2016, one signed to a major worldwide label.

From a childhood of playing in orchestras to early work as a music journalist, James has been immersed in music for 30 years. In 2008 James took this passion to the UK’s DJ Academy, which led to being invited to DJ with New City Sound. Inspired by the quote “music is what feelings sound like” James specialises in deep melodic House and chillout music. The depth and range of James' signature sound has seen him DJ at events as diverse as supporting Fatboy Slim and playing open-air festivals to bars, afternoon sessions, exclusive corporate events, and, fairly uniquely, nude life drawing events. James is also frequently asked to curate background music for bars, cafes, shops and corporate events.
Every week, James provides the New City Sound social media followers with the eclectic #ChilledSundays recommendation, which has recently evolved into a series of Chilled Sessions mixes for New City Sound. James' first Chilled Sessions Vol 1 mix featured in the global Top 10 Chill Out mixes on Mixcloud, and more are in the pipeline...
James is also developing a reputation for creating a live DJ'd electronic music soundtrack for yoga classes, which takes the practice on a journey that balances uplifting beats with deep meditation. This has seen James being invited to DJ for YogaAid and LuluLemon events, as well as special events at a number of yoga studios.
James now lives in Perth, Western Australia, and donates all his fees from DJ’ing to Youth Focus WA, a not-for-profit organisation who provide free counselling services to young people under 25 with the aim of preventing youth suicide and depression. www.youthfocus.com.au

Kyle has been a musician and composer for over fifteen years, performing live at many venues with different bands, styles and genres. His exceptional musical talent has led to him becoming a full time musician and music lecturer, teaching from BTEC level 3 to degree level.
Committed to each project, Kyle has developed his production skills and merged the same with a love for electronic music. Kyle’s signature sound is manipulating guitar and bass by reversing, distorting and enhancing them, as well as experimenting with all sorts of sounds to create an individual edge to whatever he is crafting.
On his musical journey Kyle met Matt, an inspiring influence in in terms of exposing Kyle to House music and opening his mind to new ways of composing music and elevating his existing skills. Then formed a formidable group of passionate musicians, DJs and producers: Corinne, Matt and Kyle started creating music together and through this process developed an understanding of how each each of them views and processes music.
Whilst electronic music has emerged at the forefront of Kyle’s projects, he continues to produce for many artists. He is regularly recruited by vocalists, bands and artists to assist with their sound, engineering and direction; he makes a conscious decision to produce their music to the best of his ability and write songs that people not only want to dance to but are as infectious as possible.
At the same time as working on tracks with NCS, Kyle continues to work on his own style of electronica, which caters to a niche market of experimental musicians and its uses of odd time signatures.
The experiences Kyle has had working with the label have not only developed a great friendship but a common goal between himself and the team: to produce something different, to avoid the ‘flavour of the month’ styles, to create with open minds and with freedom from glory desperation, and instead with sincerity, intelligence and authenticity.
