NCS Interview with David Dunne

Simon had the pleasure of interviewing David Dunne, catching him just before he jetted off to play at Pukka Up in Belfast with Jay Kay. David has been dj'ing for well over 20 years and presents 'Nu Cool' on the Galaxy network and the huge Manchester Global Radio Show.

Name:

David Dunne

How long have you been DJing:

First time I ever played a record for people to dance to was actually at a school disco when I was 16! But I've been playing house music, since 1988

Web address/contact details:

www.facebook.com/daviddunne or www.facebook.com/pages/tripledee

Nationality:

Anglo Irish!

Town/City:

Manchester

Your Style:

Music with words and singing that people like to dance to.

Radio Shows:

Nu Cool is a kind of leftfield/eclectic late night show playing music for people who are up late and into electronic music but who maybe want to hear all kinds of other stuff from original disco and electro through to the Chemical Brothers. The Triple Dee show is myself and my DJ/Production partner Andy Daniels and that's just big happy uplifting vocal stuff  - the kind of thing we've both played since Jesus was a boy.

Favourite DJ:

Always too tough to narrow down to one. Andy Daniels is genuinely one of my faves, as well as my mate. Just never fails to rock a room. Other than that, I'd say the DJs that most influenced what and how I play are Graeme Park and Frankie Knuckles.

Favourite producer:

I really rate DJ Meme, Grant Nelson and Joey Negro - they pretty much always make music worth listening to, not just playing out.

Favourite Label:

Motown

Favourite Artist/Band:

Stevie Wonder

Favourite Ever Record:

House music: French Kiss by Lil Louis
Other music: Superstition by Stevie Wonder.

Favourite Ever Album:

This week, It's Talking Book by Stevie Wonder but some weeks it's Revolver by the Beatles and sometimes Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout, Sign O The Times by Prince or The Queen Is Dead by the Smiths.

Top tune right now:

Burns and Fred Falke - You Stopped Loving Me - pure joy!

What tunes have you written/produced:

As Triple Dee, myself and Andy Daniels have done about 15 remixes - Our favourites are probably our mixes of Solu Music's "Fade", Timmy Vegas' "Another Dimension", and Cevin Fisher's "You Got Me Burning Up". Though our next one may be our best yet.....

What are you up to right now:

Triple Dee is about to start a new residency at Sakura Manchester, which looks to be a pretty beautiful and amazing new venue. We're also back in the studio right now working on a new tune with three more ready to be finished after that.
And right now.... I'm about to take my kids to the park!

Your Inspiration:

Claire, Dad, Molly and Kieran who love me.

Your Tipple:

Vodka or Mojitos please.

Favourite club to play:

Back in the day? The Hacienda. Hands down the most amazing venue with the most amazing crowd.

More recently, Space Ibiza, Cocoon Frankfurt , the Pukka Up Boat Parties in Ibiza and Funkademia, Manchester.

Best ever gig:

The next one.

What piece of advice would you give to anyone getting into the industry today:

Do your own thing, your way. Be prepared for some hard knocks and unfair treatment, but if you really really want to make a go of working in music, then you will do it.  You won't do it without perseverance, determination and some talent, and a whopping chunk of luck. And always do it because you love it, not just for the money. If you're lucky, the money will come, but it won't ever make something boring into something better.

Oh...and don't ever work for Oddissey in Manchester!

What is your view on the current situation in the industry, and where do you see it going:

Anyone who says they know what's going to happen in the music business and especially in dance music is lying and/or deluded. What makes this genre so interesting are the unexpected twists and turns it takes, the constantly evolving technology which powers it and the unpredictability of where it will go. Obviously it has its low moments too but it always comes back stronger and more inventive than before. Which is more than you can say for Britpop.

Anything else you think we should know about you:

I'm a complete film geek.
